What Is Corporate Culture?

Oxford Languages defines “culture” as: “the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively; the customs, art, social institutions and achievements of a particular nation, people, or other social group”.

Cultures are built as people come together for any reason: family, school, Church, sports teams, small business, hospitals, non-profit organizations, corporations, etc.

Therefore, we know that Corporate Culture is the habitat of relationships built by a group of people who work together in a corporation.

All culture must be defined, communicated, and lived out accountably to be enjoyed. When culture is not defined and communicated and lived out in mutual accountability, chaos and confusion breed discontent.

Almost every organization has Vision, Mission, and Values they claim drive their work and their purpose.

But do these statements actually drive everything and everyone? How does an organization make this happen?

Unfortunately, for many organizations, these mission statements contain simply buzz words on a website that have no impact on the individuals who work there or use their services.

A corporate culture is foundational to the success and sustainability of any organization. Any Google search will tell you the key benefits associated with fostering a positive and healthy corporate culture and give in-depth explanations.

Some common generic benefits include:

  • Enhanced Productivity and Performance
  • Better Decision-Making and Problem-Solving
  • Attraction of Top Talent
  • Improved Customer Satisfaction
  • Adaptability and Resilience

Overall, investing in and nurturing a healthy corporate culture is not only the right thing to do ethically but also a strategic imperative for long-term organizational success, sustainability, and competitiveness in the marketplace.

These are all great benefits, but how do you get there?
